2020 Kingfish Results

Thanks to all who submitted entries for the 2020 Kingfish program! It was a great year for big fish as seven Hi-Lakers crossed the 20-inch threshold. The largest was a 24-inch rainbow caught by new member, Tanner Dutra. Those who attended the February meeting were treated to a story about Tanner’s trip to a lake in the Salmon La Sac area on a sunny, summer day with his family. Tanner caught the fish from shore on his fly rod using a size-14 Royal Coachman tied to 6X fluoro tippet. Wow!

He spent 5 minutes coaxing the hard-fighting rainbow into his net. His family didn’t witness his accomplishment as he was stalking the shoreline for cruisers when the hookup happened. He yelled their names in excitement but they were too far away. As he brought the fish to hand his heart pounded and he heard the words “oh my gosh” repeat over and over in his head. It was his first fish over 20-inches and his first season fishing high lakes. After taking a few photos, Tanner released the giant rainbow.

At the end of the story we learned that Andy McGuire, another new member, was also at the lake that day and witnessed Tanner’s achievement from across the water. It was a treat to discover that these new Hi-Lakers crossed paths in the mountains. It was a memorable day for Andy as well as he landed an impressive 18-inch brown. Do these guys know how to make an entrance or what?!

Congratulations to all of the anglers who submitted their personal Kingfish for 2020. We appreciate you sharing your achievements with the club, and the opportunity to celebrate with you. Special congratulations to Tanner for the largest fish of the season. And our gratitude to Kingfish co-chair and club secretary, Jon Jones, for organizing another excellent program with delightful commentary.
